Rallycross is one of the most media and spectator freindly motorsports in the world and despite being around for more than fourty years continues to grow in popularity. All over Europe fans thrill to the sight and sound of highly modified road cars and the ultimate in Rallycross cars the lightweight, turbocharged, four wheel drive, Rallycross Supercars. Junior Rallycross is a new way for young drivers to get started in Motorsport and due to its low cost is steadily growing in popularity.
Rallycross takes place on a mixed surface course with at least two sections of loose surface and three tarmac sections. The start line is always on a tarmac section but on some circuits the finish line is placed separately to the start and may be on the loose surface. Rallycross races are short, usually over thre or four laps of a circuit which is shorter than traditional race circuits, making for better spectating.
Rallycross results are decided over a series of finals the grids for which are decided over three runs of heats, the driver with the best results in the heats takes pole for the 'A' Final with the rest lining up behind in order of performance throughout the heats. If necessary a 'B' and even a 'C' final will also be run with the winner of each of these races progressing into the next Final.
Junior Rallycross follows exactly the same proceedure but with age and car restrictions. Drivers must be between 14 and 16 years of age and can only drive lightened but otherwise standard cars of uop to 1000cc. Speeds are kept low for safety reasons but with all cars evenly matched the racing can be just as fraught and exciting as that seen in the Supercar Division.
